A major part of AVAC's work is to translate complex scientific ideas to communities through the development and wide dissemination of high-quality, user-friendly materials. The following is a list of select AVAC publications.

The Annual AVAC Report
Each year, AVAC issues a report that analyzes progress by government, industry, non-profit, and community groups toward the development of an HIV/AIDS vaccine and makes recommendations for actions in the coming year to speed ethical vaccine development.
Visit the AVAC Reports page for summaries of and links to this year's and past AVAC reports.

AIDS Vaccine Handbook: Global Perspectives (2005)
The second edition of the AIDS Vaccine Handbook is a completely revamped and international edition that provides an overview of the key scientific, policy, social, ethical and economic challenges, and of the diverse experience gained around the world over the past two decades. The easy-to-read, lively essays are written by people involved in this work as community educators and advocates, trial staff and volunteers, scientists and researchers, and policy-makers and journalists.
Visit the AIDS Vaccine Handbook page to view an electronic version of the handbook and to get ordering information.

The AIDS Vaccine Clearinghouse
The AIDS Vaccine Clearinghouse is a comprehensive and interactive source of AIDS vaccine information on the internet. It is the only website of its kind and offers original content, links to helpful resources and accurate, up-to-date information from other sources. The Clearinghouse is an essential resource for advocates, community members, researchers and policymakers engaged in the search for AIDS vaccines and other new prevention technologies.

Anticipating and Understanding Results Series
AVAC’s “Anticipating and Understanding Results” series provides timely analysis of trials of AIDS vaccines and other new HIV-prevention options.
A New Way to Protect Against HIV? Understanding the Results of Male Circumcision Studies for HIV Prevention
September 2007
This document is designed to help prevention advocates understand the ramifications of findings from studies of male circumcision for HIV prevention, and to explore the opportunities and challenges associated with implementation.

Female-Initiated HIV Prevention: What will we learn from upcoming trials?
July 2007
This document is designed to help HIV-prevention advocates understand the implications of findings from two studies of female-initiated HIV-prevention methods. The trials are historic in that they are the first large-scale efficacy studies of this kind to be brought through scheduled completion.

Will a pill a day prevent HIV? Anticipating the results of the tenofovir "PREP" trials
March 2005
Research is currently taking place that could change the way we think about preventing HIV infection. Tenofovir, a drug that is now widely used in treatment of HIV and AIDS, is being tested in Africa, Asia, and the Americas for possible use as a product that HIV-negative people could take regularly to reduce their risk of HIV infection. This potential application of tenofovir is called pre-exposure prophylaxis or "PREP". No drug has yet been licensed for PREP. Legitimate ethical concerns raised by some advocates have led to cancellations and delays in some of the PREP trials. On March 24, AVAC released a report, "Will a Pill a Day Prevent HIV? Anticipating the Results of the Tenofovir "PREP" Trials," that examines the issues surrounding the tenofovir trials and makes recommendations for ensuring that trials are carried out ethically and that provisions are made for dealing with the results of the trials when they are available. The report also calls for more concerted coordination and advance planning to accelerate evaluation, licensing and access to PREP.

Understanding the Results of the AIDSVAX Trial
May 2003
In late February 2003, the world heard preliminary
results of the first large scale human trial of
a vaccine designed to prevent HIV infection. The
results for the overall trial cohortwere clear and
disappointing. The results for a relatively small
subset of trial participants are less clear, and they
have sparked controversy and require further analysis.
This brochure will help you understand what we
do and do not know about the experimental vaccine
known as AIDSVAX.

AVAC Fact Sheet: Data Safety Monitoring Boards
(2007)
This factsheet is designed to help HIV prevention advocates understand the purpose, function and actions of a critical entity in the clinical trials process: DSMBs

Adding It All Up: Funding for HIV Vaccine
and Microbicide Development, 2000 to 2006
(2006)
From the HIV Vaccines and Microbicides Resource Tracking Working Group, the 2006 report, Adding It All Up provides detailed and comparable data on annual investments in preventive HIV vaccine and microbicide research and development (R&D), and policy and advocacy activities.

Finding Your Way (2005)
Developed by AVAC in partnership with the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO), this guide provides an introduction to the ethical principles raised in preventive HIV vaccine research and development, and examples of some of the actions taken to honor those principles.
