This week’s newsletter publishes just as the Global Fund’s 8th Replenishment Summit in South Africa is taking place. The Global Fund represents one of the strongest symbols of global solidarity in the fight against HIV, TB, and malaria, but, despite early pledges from several European Union member states and private partners, key donors (including the UK, Germany and France) appear to be stepping back, with smaller or uncertain pledges at this critical moment, and it is not yet clear what the US will do.

African countries reaffirm support for a new multilateral Pandemic Accord even as pressure mounts to sign bilateral US health agreements. The UK has reduced its upcoming Global Fund pledge just weeks before the replenishment summit. Meanwhile, additional regulatory submissions of LEN for PrEP are being made reflecting accelerated actions and real lessons learned from earlier PrEP rollout.

This week, South Africa became the first African nation to register injectable lenacapavir (LEN) for PrEP. The US released a draft global health “Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU) with serious omissions related to HIV prevention and community engagement; and a leaked document indicates that the European Union may cut future funding to Gavi and the Global Fund. And just as this issue was being published, The Lancet issued a new series, Innovations in Sexual and Reproductive Health.
