Global Health Watch: State Dept. diverts millions for contraception, who's leading US global health, new Global Fund ED, UNAIDS' future

For nearly two years, the US Administration has ignored Congress and denied women and couples of life-saving sexual and reproductive health commodities. So this week’s breaking news that the US Department of State is shifting millions of dollars appropriated by Congress for contraception to “stem some of the bleeding they’ve caused by starting a reckless war and creating a global energy crisis” is perhaps not surprising. But it is appalling, nonetheless. With the US midterm elections happening next week, all members of Congress, irrespective of party or ideology, should be speaking up and taking back their power of the purse.

No Time to Lose: Reaching At Least Three Million with LEN for PrEP by 2027

AVAC and Access Bridge today issued a global call to action and new publication urging governments, donors, manufacturers, implementers, and advocates to work toward a bold but achievable goal: reaching at least three million people with injectable lenacapavir (LEN) for HIV prevention by the end of 2027. This new, more ambitious target will drive affordability, build a sustainable PrEP market, and accelerate impact.

The power and leadership of advocates were on full display at AIDS 2026. Following global funding cuts and concerns about de-prioritization of communities and civil society, advocates brought evidence of their impact and the value of continued investment in communities to Rio. On topics ranging from HIV prevention access to the future of artificial intelligence in HIV programs, advocates were driving conference discussions to ensure the community agenda was seen, heard and acted upon.

The US fiscal year ended this week amid questions about the billion dollars in Congressionally-appropriated foreign assistance, while new strategies for HIV research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the America First Global Health strategy theoretically move into implementation phases.
