Innovation Without Access is Injustice: AIDS 2026 Opens in Rio

“Innovation without access is injustice.” That message, delivered during Monday evening’s opening ceremony of the 26th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2026) captured the defining theme emerging from the first days of the meeting. As scientific innovation accelerates with new prevention options, cure research and long-acting antiretroviral treatment advancing, advocates, researchers, health officials and donors are warning that shrinking funding, unequal access and fragile delivery systems threaten to undermine decades of progress. The message is clear: scientific innovation alone will not end the epidemic.

AVAC and Access Bridge Applaud Monthly PrEP Pill Access Announcement; Call for Speed, Scale and Equity in Future Monthly Oral Alimatravir Introduction

AVAC and Access Bridge applaud Merck’s announcement today that it has granted seven direct licenses to generic manufacturers to produce their investigational monthly pill for HIV prevention, known as MK-8527, or alimatravir, while Phase 3 clinical trials are still enrolling. “Today’s news reflects truly positive momentum in future access to alimatravir for PrEP, if proven safe and effective,” said Mitchell Warren, AVAC’s executive director.

Global Health Watch: 500,000 oppose White House grant rule, CDC & PEPFAR’s future, global health transition strategy, Gawande & AIDS 2026

More than half a million comments were submitted in response to the White House’s proposal to politicize federal research grants – with a significant majority opposing it. At the same time, questions mounted over the future of the CDC, PEPFAR, and the Administration’s vision for transitioning US global health programs. This week also features reflections from former USAID global health leader Atul Gawande on the human cost of dismantling USAID and the likely discussions ahead at AIDS 2026 on the consequences of US policy changes for HIV programs and global health.

Global Health Watch: Latest on White House OMB Federal Rx Grant Proposal, Global Fund Gains Stability, New Model for GH Partnerships

As the comment period to oppose the White House Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) proposal to give political appointees greater authority over federal research grants closes next Monday, the Global Fund avoided new ideological restrictions on US funding even as it prepares for a new Executive Director. And new articles and analyses of US bilateral health agreements under the “America First Global Health Strategy” suggest the Administration’s vision for global health is shifting from supporting epidemic control to managing country transitions.
